A graduate of Northeastern University, Keener earned a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.8 GPA. His academic background gave structure to an interest that had been developing for years: understanding natural systems, observing how environments function, and learning how human activity interacts with the land, water, and spaces people depend on.

“My background in environmental science provided a deeper understanding of the complex interactions between human societies and natural ecosystems,” Keener said.

Keener’s interests extend beyond formal education. He has spent significant time hiking, camping, biking, canoeing, and traveling through different environments. His experiences include a Survival Leadership program in the Rocky Mountains, time exploring Yellowstone, a 250-mile bike trek from Boston to Provincetown, a 300-mile bike trek from Syracuse, New York, to Cape Vincent and into Canada, and a combined bike, canoe, and hiking trip from Saratoga, New York, to the Allagash region of Maine.

Those experiences helped shape how Keener thinks about preparation, patience, and steady progress. Outdoor challenges require planning, awareness, and the ability to continue forward when conditions change. For Keener, that process became more than recreation. It became a way to build confidence, discipline, and perspective.

“Spending time outdoors matters to me because I appreciate the freedom and the physical challenge,” Keener said.

Keener also has interests in drawing, architectural design, and travel, including time spent in Italy, Spain, and France. These interests reflect a broader curiosity about places, structures, landscapes, and the details that shape how people experience the world around them.
